A 30-Minute Drive from Columbia to a Calm, Light-Filled Studio

From Columbia, the drive to my Lutherville studio takes about thirty to thirty-five minutes — north on I-695 (the Baltimore Beltway) or I-95, then a short stretch through Lutherville-Timonium. Most Columbia families take the I-695 outer loop; it’s the most direct route outside of rush hour.

It’s a longer drive than some closer-in options, and I want to be transparent about that. You only do this drive once or twice — once for the session itself, and once if your family decides to come up for the gallery selection meeting. What you get on arrival is a fully-equipped studio purpose-built for newborn photography:

  • Reserved parking right at the door
  • Warm, controlled temperature for baby
  • A quiet, private room for nursing or settling in
  • Wraps, swaddles, headbands, bonnets, and baskets ready
  • A wardrobe closet for parents and siblings if you’d like to use it

You bring the baby. I handle the rest.

What Columbia Families Get with Their Newborn Session

Newborn sessions at my studio are posed sessions — what some families call classic newborn photography. The studio is set up specifically for newborn safety and quality: warm controlled temperature, professional lighting, soundproofed rooms, and an extensive collection of wraps, props, and baskets — a fully-equipped environment that consistently produces gallery-grade results.

Your baby will be photographed:

  • Sleeping in soft wraps and bare-skin curls
  • In parent arms and against parent skin
  • With siblings included (if you’d like)
  • In careful basket and bowl setups

Sessions last two to three hours. That sounds long, but it moves easily because we work around feeds, naps, and any pauses your baby needs.

Why Columbia Families Choose Ana Koska Photography

I’ve been photographing newborns for over fifteen years — more experience than most photographers currently advertising newborn work in the Columbia area.

My work has been recognized as the Best Newborn Photographer in Baltimore in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2024 — five separate years of independent recognition voted by Baltimore Magazine readers and editors. Not self-claimed.

Featured on Reuters, MSNBC, NBC, Fox, and ABC News.

Columbia families researching newborn photographers across the Baltimore-DC region are looking for someone with consistent, recognized, gallery-quality work — and the experience to handle every baby with the same calm, careful approach regardless of how the session unfolds. That’s what fifteen years of newborn specialization and five Best of Baltimore awards represent.

For Columbia families considering the drive, here’s what’s included. Newborn sessions start at $600 for the MINI package (5 digital images and a gallery of 20). The RUBY package is $900 (10 digital images, 50-70 gallery), and DIAMOND is $1,100 (20 digital images, 50-70 gallery). Whichever package you choose, the session itself is a half-day investment — and the gallery is what stays on your walls for the next fifteen years.

When to Book Your Newborn Session

The best time to schedule a newborn session is during your second trimester, before things get hectic. Booking early secures a window in your due-date range.

The actual session happens within the first five to fourteen days after your baby is born — when newborns still curl easily and sleep deeply.

Most Columbia families deliver at Howard County General Hospital — Howard County’s largest hospital and a Johns Hopkins Medicine affiliate at 5755 Cedar Lane in Columbia. Once your baby is born and you’re settled at home, call or message me and we schedule the session for whatever day works best in that first two-week window. We’ll work around the drive timing — most Columbia families come up mid-morning to avoid traffic.

Columbia Newborn Photography Notes

Columbia is one of the country’s original planned communities, founded in 1967 by James Rouse as a thoughtful, mixed-use alternative to the suburban sprawl of the era. Today it’s home to over a hundred thousand residents across distinctive village clusters around Lake Kittamaqundi and Merriweather Post Pavilion — families who chose this community for the same reasons they choose how they document their children: intention, design, and longevity.

Many of the Columbia families I photograph are professionals balancing demanding careers with the slower, more intentional pace of new parenthood. They’re willing to drive for work they trust will hold up on their walls for decades. Whatever your story — first child, second, or third — the approach is the same: a calm pace, careful safety, and a gallery you’ll keep for a lifetime. Columbia is part of my broader Baltimore newborn photography service across the region.

★★★★★

“Ana is absolutely amazing. She is a professional photographer AND a professional mother. I was worried that it would end up as a disaster with our baby screaming, but Ana was able to calm the baby down easily (better than us!). You can tell Ana is truly passionate about her job. I highly recommend Ana! We will be coming back for future shoots!”

Do you photograph at our Columbia home, or only in the studio?

Newborn sessions are studio-only at my Lutherville-Timonium location, about thirty to thirty-five minutes north of Columbia. The studio is purpose-built for newborn photography with controlled temperature, professional lighting, sound dampening, and an extensive prop and wrap collection. Families don’t need to prepare anything at home — the drive is shorter than the prep an in-home session would typically require.

When should we book if delivering at Howard County General Hospital?

Book during your second trimester to secure your due-date window. Howard County General is the main hospital in Columbia and a Johns Hopkins Medicine affiliate. Once your baby is born and you’re settled at home, we schedule the session for whatever day works best in the first five to fourteen days. Most Columbia families come up mid-morning to avoid Beltway traffic.

Can siblings and family be in the session?

Yes. Sibling and parent portraits are part of the session. We typically do those first while everyone is fresh, then move to baby-only setups. Many Columbia families bring older siblings — the studio is calm and child-friendly.
