Newborn twin photoshoot Baltimore MD - mom and dad holding twins in studio

There’s something truly extraordinary about twins. Two tiny faces, two sets of perfect little hands, one incredible family moment that will never come again.

I’m Ana Koska, a Baltimore-based newborn photographer with over 15 years of experience, voted one of Baltimore’s Top Newborn Photographers by Expertise.com in 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Twin sessions are among the most rewarding I do, and some of the most technically demanding. If you’re expecting twins in the Baltimore or Maryland area and wondering what a professional newborn twin photoshoot looks like, my Baltimore newborn photography studio is fully equipped and ready for you.

Key Takeaways:

  • Twin newborn photography works best within the first 5 to 14 days after birth, when babies are sleepiest and most flexible for posing together.
  • A twin session in my Baltimore studio typically runs 3 to 4 hours – longer than a single newborn session, to allow for individual poses, twin poses, and full family portraits.
  • From side-by-side basket poses to parent hold portraits, a twin newborn photoshoot captures a once-in-a-lifetime moment for your growing family.

Why Twin Newborn Photography Requires a Different Approach

Twin newborn photography isn’t simply “double the babies.” It requires a different session flow, different posing strategy, and more time – and that’s exactly why experience matters.

With twins, I always begin with the babies individually to get them settled and deeply asleep. Only then do I bring them together for the paired poses. This approach is safer, calmer, and produces the most natural-looking results. Families across Baltimore and Maryland trust this process – and it shows in the final images.

Each twin also has their own temperament, their own feeding rhythm, their own way of settling. I work with both of them, patiently, never rushing. A twin newborn session at my studio is relaxed by design.

And once both babies are calm and ready, the real magic begins, starting with the poses.

Twin Newborn Poses I Love in My Baltimore Studio

Over 15 years of photographing newborns in the Baltimore area, I’ve developed a set of go-to twin poses that are both beautiful and safe. Here’s what to expect.

Side-by-Side and Tucked Poses

The side-by-side pose is a classic for twins, and for good reason. Placing both babies close together, heads touching or nearly touching, captures their bond in the most direct way. I love shooting this from directly above, which gives a clean, intimate perspective that highlights just how tiny they are together.

For this pose, I typically use neutral-toned setups – beige, cream, or tan, so the babies remain the focus. The result is timeless and editorial.

Basket and Prop Poses for Twins

Basket and prop poses are where the visual storytelling really begins. I use a variety of baskets, crates, and bowls in my Baltimore studio, all sized to hold two newborns safely and comfortably

The blue fur basket you see in these images is one of my most-used twin props; it adds warmth and color while keeping the focus entirely on the babies.

Safety is always the top priority. Every prop pose with twins is carefully monitored, and I never leave babies unsupported during the session.

As beautiful as the baby-only poses are, some of the most powerful images from a twin session come when mom and dad step in front of the camera.

Parent Portraits with Twin Newborns

Some of my favorite images from twin sessions aren’t of the babies alone, they’re of the parents holding their children for the very first time. The emotion in those moments is impossible to replicate.

Dad Holding Twin Newborns

There’s something powerful about a dad holding a newborn, and with twins, that feeling is doubled. I photograph each parent holding babies individually and together, giving you a complete set of family portraits from the session.

Mom Holding Twin Newborns

Mama holding both twins at once is one of the most requested shots in any twin session – and one of the most beautiful. I guide parents through positioning so everyone is comfortable and the image looks natural, not staged.

Both Parents Together

The full family portrait, both parents, both babies is the centerpiece of every twin session I do. These are the images that end up framed above the fireplace. They tell the whole story in a single frame.

Knowing what these sessions look like is one thing – knowing what to expect on the day itself is another, and that’s where a lot of families feel unsure.

What to Expect at a Twin Newborn Session in My Baltimore Studio

A twin session is longer than a standard newborn session. Plan for 3 to 4 hours, and don’t worry, that time is well-spent. We’ll cover twin poses, individual poses, parent portraits, and full family shots.

The studio is kept warm throughout the session to keep both babies comfortable and sleepy. Feeding breaks are fully expected and built into the session flow. I ask that you bring extra formula or be ready to nurse, as twin sessions have more moving parts than single sessions.

For a complete walkthrough of how to prepare, I recommend reading my Newborn Photo Session Prep Guide for Parents before your session day.

And if you want to make the most of every minute in the studio, a little preparation before you arrive goes a long way.

How to Prepare for Your Twin Newborn Photoshoot in Baltimore

Preparation makes a real difference with twin sessions. Here are the 5 most important things I tell twin families before they arrive at my studio:

  1. Book early – ideally before your due date. Twin births often come earlier than expected, and the newborn window is short.
  2. Plan for the first 5 to 14 days – this is when babies are sleepiest and most cooperative for posing.
  3. Feed both babies just before leaving for the studio – full babies are calm babies.
  4. Dress simply – neutral, coordinating colors work best on camera. For outfit inspiration, check out my Newborn Photoshoot Outfits guide.
  5. Let go of the timeline – twin sessions are wonderfully unpredictable. I’ll handle everything; you just need to relax and enjoy it.
