There’s a moment I look forward to in every newborn sibling photoshoot – when an older brother or sister leans in close to the baby for the very first time. Sometimes shy, sometimes beaming, always magical.
I’m Ana Koska, a newborn photographer based in Lutherville-Timonium, Maryland, and for 15+ years I’ve been capturing these fleeting first moments for families across the Baltimore area.
This guide covers everything you need to know, from timing and poses to what to expect on the day.
Key Takeaways:
- From the classic hold to side-by-side poses and big sister or big brother moments, a newborn sibling session captures a once-in-a-lifetime bond that grows more precious with every passing year.
- Preparing your older child in advance by talking about the session, letting them pick their outfit, and arriving early, makes all the difference between a stressful and a smooth, joyful experience.
- In my 15+ years of photographing families across Baltimore and Maryland, sibling sessions consistently produce the most emotionally powerful and treasured images a family can have.
Why Include Siblings in Your Newborn Photoshoot?

Most parents book a newborn session to capture their baby’s earliest days – those tiny fingers, that soft little curl, the way a newborn wraps so peacefully in a blanket. But some of the most emotionally powerful images I’ve created in my Baltimore studio aren’t of the baby alone. They’re of the baby with a sibling.
The way an older child looks at a newborn – with wonder, with pride, sometimes with a little confusion is completely unrepeatable. A few weeks later, that look is already different. The newborn window is short, and so is this very specific moment of first meeting.
Including siblings in your newborn session doesn’t complicate things but enriches them. You walk away with heartwarming family portraits that tell a fuller story: not just here is our baby, but here is our family, growing together.
And if you want to make the most of that story? Timing is everything.
When Is the Best Time for a Newborn Sibling Photoshoot in Studio?

The sweet spot for any newborn session, with or without siblings, is within the first 5 to 14 days after birth. Yet for sibling sessions specifically, this timing matters even more.
The younger the baby, the more relaxed the whole session feels, which makes it easier for older siblings to interact naturally, without the baby being fussy or alert for long stretches.
I know that the first two weeks postpartum are also exhausting for parents, but in my experience, families who push through and book early always say the same thing afterward: “I’m so glad we did it.”

Nevertheless, knowing when to book is the first step but knowing what to expect on the day of the session makes the whole experience so much smoother for everyone, especially little ones.
What to Expect on the Day of Your Newborn Sibling Photoshoot

Newborn sibling sessions are unhurried by design. I typically schedule 2 to 3 hours, not because we’ll be shooting the entire time, but because we let the baby lead the pace. Feeding breaks, soothing, repositioning, it’s all part of the process.
We start with the baby alone while siblings warm up and get comfortable in the studio. Then we bring everyone together. Older kids who were shy at the beginning are usually completely relaxed by this point, and that’s when the most natural, authentic moments happen. Families across Baltimore and Maryland trust this process.

It’s important not to stress if your older child is reluctant at first. If you want to arrive fully prepared, my Newborn Photo Session Prep Guide for Parents walks you through everything you need to know before the session.

Every session is different, but one thing is always true – the more prepared your older child is, the smoother and more enjoyable the whole experience will be.
How to Prepare Your Older Child for the Newborn Sibling Photo Session in Studio

The biggest mistake parents make is surprising their older child on the day of the session. A little preparation goes a long way.
A few days before, talk to your child about what’s going to happen, explain that you’re going to a special place to take pictures of the whole family with the new baby. Show them a photo of my studio if it helps. Let them know they’ll get to hold and cuddle the baby, and that it’s going to be fun.

A few practical tips for older child that work really well:
- Let them pick their outfit – it gives them a sense of control and gets them excited
- Bring a small snack – a hungry toddler is rarely a cooperative one
- Arrive a little early – give them time to explore the space before we start shooting
- Don’t overhype it – keep it casual and low-pressure
In my experience, kids who feel included rather than directed are always the ones who shine in front of the camera.

And once they’re comfortable and relaxed? That’s when the real magic happens – in the poses and moments we create together.
Newborn Sibling Photoshoot Ideas & Poses
This is honestly my favorite part of every session. Once the older kids are warmed up and the baby is settled, we move into the sibling poses, and this is where the most memorable, heartwarming images come to life.
If you’d like to see more examples of how these moments look in finished photographs, you can explore the newborn session gallery from my Baltimore studio.
The Classic Hold – Sibling Holding the Newborn
There’s nothing quite like the image of an older child holding their baby brother or sister for the first time. It’s intimate, it’s emotional, and it never gets old. Safety is always my top priority here so I guide every child carefully and stay close throughout, so parents can relax and just watch the moment unfold.

Side by Side – Lying Down Together
One of the most popular setups in my studio is having siblings lie down together on a soft blanket or fur wrap, with the baby nestled gently between them. Photographed from above, this pose creates a beautifully clean, minimalist composition that looks stunning on a wall.

Both siblings kissing the baby simultaneously? That image will hang on your wall forever.

Big Sister & the Newborn – A Bond Like No Other
Two big sisters, one sleeping baby – this is one of my favorite setups in the Baltimore studio. There’s something about the way sisters instinctively lean in, protect, and adore a newborn that creates the most tender, emotional portraits.

Big Brothers & the Newborn – Proud, Gentle, Unforgettable
Big brothers often surprise parents the most. That tough little guy who wasn’t sure about this whole “new baby” thing? Put him on a soft blanket next to his newborn sister, and watch what happens. Some of my most heartwarming images from 15+ years of newborn photography in Maryland come from these quiet, gentle big brother moments.

When There Are Multiple Older Siblings
Not every family has just one older child – and a newborn sibling photoshoot can absolutely include two, three, or even more siblings together. These group compositions require a little more patience and coordination, but the result is always worth it.

Once you have the poses sorted, the next thing that makes a real difference in your newborn sibling photos is what everyone wears (if you can make an agreement with your older child).
What to Wear for Your Newborn Sibling Pictures in Ana Koska Photography Studio?

Outfits can make or break the final images but the good news is that you don’t need to overthink it. A few simple guidelines go a long way.
Stick to soft, neutral tones as these tones complement the baby’s delicate skin tones and keep the focus on the faces and the connection between siblings, not the clothing.
Coordinate outfits without matching them exactly, everyone should look like they belong together, but not like they’re wearing a uniform. And if you have an older child who wants to have a say in what they wear, let them, within the color palette. It goes a long way.

For the baby, a simple white or cream wrap is almost always the most timeless choice. For a complete guide on colors, styles and what to avoid, check out my post on What to Wear for a Session.
